Coop was a good-natured flat coated retriever. I got to spend time with him while he still had boundless energy. I’m glad to have done his portrait while he was still here.

Koi

Oil on canvas, 48″ x 48″ (121.9cm x 121.9cm)
Available: $3200

I was attracted by the movement and color in an outdoor koi pond and also by the nearly caligraphic markings on the fish. I wanted to keep a degree of tension in the composition because, even though the pond had a very peaceful aspect, it was crowded and the fish would occasionally have a burst of chaotic activity.

Annapurna Trail, Nepal
Donkeys are the 18-wheelers or “freight trains” of the Himalayas. You rarely see anything on wheels there because the terrain is just too rugged. We encountered a couple of these trains every day on the trail carrying crates of live chickens, firewood, bags of rice, furniture, and anything else you can imagine. At first there were lots of disgusted complaints about having to dodge “road apples” all the time. But after several miles on the trail we were all grateful to have something soft to step on once in awhile.
