Annapurna Trail, Nepal
Donkeys are the 18-wheelers or “freight trains” of the Himalayas. You rarely see anything on wheels there because the terrain is just too rugged. We encountered a couple of these trains every day on the trail carrying crates of live chickens, firewood, bags of rice, furniture, and anything else you can imagine. At first there were lots of disgusted complaints about having to dodge “road apples” all the time. But after several miles on the trail we were all grateful to have something soft to step on once in awhile.

Amy & Garfield

Amy & Garfield

Brush, pen, and ink on illustration board, 18″x24″ (30.5cm x 35.5cm)
Personal Collection

My daughter and her close friend. Garfield died happy after eating a nice turkey dinner at the age of 22. His teeth were gone and his ears shredded to nubs from countless fights. But he was gentle with his family and was very well loved.

At one time I thought about doing a “rogue’s gallery” of some of my more memorable commercial art clients… but decided against it since it might not be good for business. This is the first and only piece I did along those lines.

Sitting in a meeting, doodling on a legal pad and looking out the window, I was amused by how the lines of the venetian blinds in the window looked like the lines on the legal pad – so I stored that observation away. Then while driving home from work months later, trying to figure out how to handle a new project with a tight deadline, this image popped into my head.
